I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers. -Claude Monet
I'm not sure that I would have found my subject matter if I was not so enamored with plants and flowers. In particular, it was after I started focussing my gardening efforts in the direction of native plants that I realized that was what I wanted to paint. There are many well known examples of beautiful California native flora, such as California poppies, but the more you look in the wild, the more you see. Many of these plants and their flowers are so small that they are easily overlooked. By painting them in a large format, sometimes several times their real size, I can show the beauty and intricacy at a human scale.
